January to May 2012:

Jan 9, 2012

7:00 PM   Our guest Monday evening, January 9, 2012 will be Dusty Viedeman from Revelstoke. He has owned and operated Revelstoke Photohouse from 1969 to 2007, his passion in the last 6 or 7 years is bird photography, and he currently works part time as an industrial photographer for BC Hydro. Among his other interests are flying, snowmobiling in the winter and motorbiking in summer. He flies radio controlled aircraft as well and has a class three Ham Radio License. I initially asked Dusty to share some of his bird photography with us. When he returns from southern Alberta later this week from his Snowy Owl expedition, I hope to convince him to also share some of his experiences as an industrial photographer if he is able to do so. There appears to be quite a bit of interest from our club in that area as well. I am hoping that there will be time for a guided " Practice Tips " session at the end for those of us with camera our cameras.  I know Dusty is looking forward to meeting some of our local Photo Arts enthusiasts, as he has been here photographing many times on his own and is aware of the richness of our area and we look forward to seeing him and you Monday evening.

7:20 - 8:00  Part 1 Henry Schnell:

Work can become a big part of our lives, yet so often we leave the description of what we do, or how we occupy our time at work to "backhoe operator" or some other term that rarely does justice to the "works" role is in our everyday existence. Henry Schnell will join us on Monday evening to look back on some of our predecessor's views on "work", as seen through their cameras, to discuss some of the important features of how we should view work and how specific aspects of work can  be captured successfully. Do cultural differences affect how we perceive work and how do people from different cultures photograph work? This view overlaps also with "street photography”. He will take the time to share some of his personal experiences with industry and  street photography in Europe, South America and Africa.  Henry, who has been a long-time enthusiastic member of the Saskatoon Camera Club and Versailles Images in France, will bring an international perspective to  our meeting. He will undoubtedly catch our attention. Finally, Henry has organized a photo-shoot on the weekend after the meeting (February 18) to help those of us who wish to put some of the elements of his presentation to the test. He will need to know the numbers of participants expected next Saturday.

Henry's Webpage is http://aiglebayphoto.com/about.htm

8:00 - 8:15  Refreshment  Break
8:15 - 8:45  Part II Henry  Schnell
8:45 - 9:00  Intro for SPAC Club members to Website Member Page Features

                                                                                                                                                                           Revised Agenda:
Jim Hoskins will discuss macro photography techniques and show some of his lenses and equipment. A number of macro photos from a source outside our club will be shown, with discussions on how these photos could be taken.  Jim will also lead a critique session of these photos, with members invited to give their comments.

During the second half of the meeting, there will be a critique session on photos on general subjects, again with comments from members.

March 12                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Gerry Buzzell will lead an explanation on water photography.  "Shooting the Falls - Photography of moving water". Moving water is one of the most attractive subjects for photography, but the resulting photos are often disappointing, failing to capture the sense of being there. Gerry will discuss the ins-and-outs of this subject, using as examples waterfalls, rapids, waves, and precipitation. He will aim to educate and entertain.

If time allows near the end of the meeting, images from the Lions Gate Camera Club sponsored Celebration of Nature Photography 2011 photo competition will be shown.

March 26

Ian James has offered to lead the session Monday evening with an agenda that has lots of opportunity for questions and discussion. The topics we hope to cover are outlined in his summary below

1) - rodeo video 6 minutes.. (Falkland rodeo is coming up in May)
2) - some before and after comparisons – we hear a lot of “my pictures look so dull.. it’s depressing” – all RAW amd many JPEG images need some degree of editing – also some comparisons of RAW images to RAW images with “in camera filters being used.
3) - Where can I get interesting shots? – show some shots from the new Askews store being built... and how to get creative with boring subject matter. .. such as a construction site.
4) - Scanning slides/negatives – a few examples and a few tips as to what worked for me. (10,000 scans later)
5) - example of a NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) tutorial video covering photo editing  – 12 minutes.
6) – If there is an interest, I can provide a short Lightroom review – ( I just downloaded version 4)
7) – Again.. if there is an interest I can review the making of Coffee table books via MyPublisher (I’ll bring a couple of example books)  –  I’ll load the software on the laptop and do a walk through showing how easy it is to make a book.
8) – time permitting  a few “people” images and a few shots from our trip across Canada
9) General discussion on any topic the group would like – all of the above should, as much as possible be interactive... ie:  it should be a casual evening with lots of discussion.

Noreen Sadiwynk is asking members to get their pictures for the Library exhibit ready and to bring them to the meeting on Monday. She will be there early if you need assistance. It would be good to advise Noreen if you will be bringing your pictures later and to indicate how many pictures you are providing.
