Off Camera Flash 101: Introduction
January 27, 2024     Instructor: Brian Mohr

As photographers, we see the ambient light and learn to use it. For many of us, flash photography seems complicated and feels intimidating. And yet, we see how using off camera flash can create amazing images. Club member Brian Mohr heard our desire to learn and assured us we could. He put together an intensive workshop that Carolyn Morgan hosted and all felt they benefited from the experience.

Frank:

What can I say about Saturdays workshop?
Well it was amazing, I learned a lot about light .
I learned about how dramatic light can be and how it can make your pictures tell a story.
I don’t have a lot of pictures to show, but the few I have show the progress made in one day.

Shirley:

Brian, thanks for preparing this most helpful workshop. You presented a balance of explaining theory and hands-on practice.

Beverly’s behind the scenes help to hold a light or offer a suggestion was also appreciated.

And thank you Carolyn for providing the shop, coffee and yummy cake!

Bruce:

It was a great learning experience. It was interesting to see that by moving the lights how the subject presentation was changed.

Len:

Lighting 101 provided me a great opportunity to overcome numerous challenges I was encountering with my flash photography.

Brian did a great job with helping me understand the basic principles behind how Aperture size and Shutter speed impact on flash function and left me with a much clearer idea on how I could capture the strengths and avoid the weaknesses of both on-camera and off-camera flash.
